Setting Up Google Analytics 4 for Conversion Tracking

Introduction

Google's shift to Universal Analytics left many marketers confused. GA4 operates on an entirely different, event-based model. Setting it up correctly is paramount to accurately measuring ROI. Here's a quick setup guide emphasizing Google Analytics 4.

Step 1: Creating the Property

Log into your analytics account, navigate to Admin, and create a new GA4 property. Enter your website URL and select your timezone and currency.

Step 2: The Data Stream and Tag Manager

GA4 utilizes "Data Streams" to collect information. Grab the Measurement ID (looks like G-XXXXXXXXXX). While you can paste the raw script into your head tag, we recommend using Google Tag Manager to deploy the GA4 Configuration tag.

Step 3: Defining Conversions

In GA4, everything is an event. To track a conversion (like a form submission or a purchase), you first must identify the event name. Navigate to Admin -> Events. Find the event you want to track as a goal, and toggle the switch that says "Mark as conversion." It is truly that simple now compared to the old destination-based goals!

Need a visual representation of this data? Connect your GA4 property to Google Search Console for comprehensive reporting.
